Augusto Barros

Born in Lisbon in 1929, Augusto Barros passed away in the same city in 1997. He had his first solo exhibition in 1959 at the Palácio Foz in Lisbon. He received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Hamburg in 1961. In 1963, he settled in Paris, where he remained until the early 90s. Throughout his life, he became a companion and friend of "historic artists" such as Poliakoff, Delaunay, Man Ray, Vieira da Silva, and Gonçalo Duarte. It was also in 1963 that the artist had his first solo exhibition in Paris, surrounded by tremendous success and widely referenced in the specialized press. Barros was averse to any particular artistic movement, preferring to follow his instinct and poetic sense. However, Poliakoff was an acknowledged influence in various domains. Represented in major museums across Europe, Augusto Barros' work is also found in many important national and international private collections.
