Mezzotint Engraving is a demanding engraving technique in which the metal plate is initially worked to have a uniform granulated surface of absolute black. The artist builds the drawing by gradually opening and uncovering light areas and intermediate values. When applying ink, it will be retained in the grooves but with less adherence in the open areas of the drawing, depending on the intensity of smoothing.

Joana Geraldes (b. 1991), who began her journey through drawing, has been increasingly dedicated to engraving and is currently an exceptional engraver and printer at Atelier CPS. Her personal memories and biographical experiences, the subject of a recent exhibition of drawings in Entroncamento, where she was born, appear in this engraving in two color variants, transposed into a symbolic and lyrical plane. The flower that unfolds in the wind of chance or destiny, whether solar or lunar, seems to defy with its delicacy and fragility the night of an absolute unknown that represents all the fears of humanity. Ultimately, it is a lesson of hope and permanence in a time of great anxiety.

Joana Geraldes

Joana Geraldes has been working as a printer at Centro Português de Serigrafia since 2018. Born in 1991, in Entroncamento, she graduated in Equipment Design (2012) and Drawing (2015) at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon. It was in this "home" that she learned the basics of printmaking and developed an appreciation for this art of infinite possibilities. Her desire to continue learning and experimenting with printmaking is constant (and constantly renewed), and since then she has been working on projects in this field and participating in exhibitions. With one hand in printmaking, she uses the other to embrace drawing and illustration: taking small steps and aiming for great journeys.
