Mezzotint Print is a demanding engraving technique in which the metal plate is initially worked to have a uniform granulated surface of absolute black. The artist constructs the drawing by gradually opening and discovering light areas and intermediate values. When applying ink, it is retained in the grooves but has less adhesion in the open areas of the drawing, depending on the intensity of the smoothing.
Joana Geraldes (b.1991), who began her career in drawing, has been increasingly dedicated to printmaking and is currently an exceptional engraver and printer at Atelier CPS. Her personal memories and biographical experiences, the theme of a recent drawing exhibition in Entroncamento, where she was born, appear in this print in two color variations, transposed into a symbolic and lyrical plane. The flower that wilts in the wind of chance or destiny, whether solar or lunar, seems to defy, with its delicacy and fragility, the night of an absolute unknown that represents all the fears of humanity. Ultimately, it is a lesson of hope and permanence in a time of great anxiety.
