A CALLIGRAPHY OF THE IMAGINARY
Álvaro Lapa (Évora, 1939 - Porto, 2006), a self-taught painter and writer, whose work lies between new figuration and informality, is the creator of one of the most unique styles in contemporary Portuguese art, merging the universes of painting and writing with an intimate and philosophical reflection. His work has generated various attempts to approach an aesthetic that asserts itself through provocation and originality of its artistic proposals, as well as through a poetic of silence and rupture. In this current body of work, the intense and nocturnal sign of a nocturnal calligraphy embraced by blue, the color of the imaginary, reflects the essence of his entire language, which seems to emerge directly from the sources of the subconscious, without an apparent connection to reality but carrying its enigma and energy, not only appealing to our deciphering, but also to communication.
