As Fantasias e o Teatro da Memória

João Paulo (Arganil, 1929) is a discreet artist who completed his sculpture course at ESBAL and was a scholarship recipient from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in painting in 1965. In 1967, he received the National Painting Prize (tied with Nadir Afonso). His resume includes dozens of exhibitions in Portugal and abroad. Notable among them are the exhibition at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1974 and at the Oriente Foundation in 2010. He has traced a path of great authenticity and genuine attention to the images of his dreamy spirit and lover of forms and myths that have nourished art throughout history. These images appear uninvited, in the impulse of an unconscious that resurrects the universe of ancient stories of knights and princesses, nymphs, dragons, and tricksters. Ultimately, they reconstitute our own experiences, imbued with a magical enchantment.
