Graça Martins

Born in Vila do Conde and currently residing in Porto, this artist has a diverse background in the arts. In 1973, they completed the Modelist Stylist Course at the Ars Utória School in Milan. They later obtained a degree in Design/Graphic Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Porto. Since 1979, they have been collaborating with publishers, creating book covers and illustrations. Throughout their career, this artist has received several awards and recognition for their work. In 1990, they were awarded the 1st National Drawing Prize in celebration of the Bicentenary of the Invention of the Pencil, held at Árvore in Porto. In 2002, they received two Honorable Mentions in Painting at the VII Biennial of Plastic Arts City of Montijo - Vespeira Prize. Their artwork can be found in notable institutions such as the National Museum of Modern Art and the Serralves Foundation in Porto. When discussing their painting project, the artist states that it revolves around the appropriation of images and their interaction within collages. They believe that the purpose of painting in contemporary times lies in exceeding the medium itself. The true surprise lies in the questions raised by the artwork.
