Alexandre Alves Costa
Alexandre Vieira Pinto Alves Costa was born in Porto in 1939. He attended the Architecture course at the School of Fine Arts in Porto, after which he interned at the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering with Nuno Portas, obtaining his Architect diploma in 1966.
Since 1970, Alexandre Alves Costa has been practicing architecture as a freelance professional. In 1972, he began his career in university teaching, focusing on Project and History of Portuguese Architecture.
He has collaborated with architects such as Álvaro Siza Vieira, Camilo Cortesão, José Luís Gomes, J.M. Soares, A. Corte Real, and Sérgio Fernandez, as well as the Porto City Council, undertaking projects for various municipalities, including Porto, Matosinhos, Coimbra, Viseu, and Lisbon.
In 1979, at the University of Porto, he joined the Installation Committee of the Architecture Course at FAUP, serving as President of the Management Council and President of the Scientific Council, and coordinating the first PhD Program in Architecture.
At the University of Coimbra and the University of Minho, in 1988 and 1997 respectively, he was a member of the installation committees for the Architecture courses. He is currently a retired Full Professor at the University of Porto.
Alexandre Alves Costa is also the author of several articles published in Architecture magazines, such as Lótus International, 9H, Domus, Wonen Tabk, Casabella, Architecti, Jornal dos Arquitectos, Monumentos, and Estudos/Património. He has been invited to serve on editorial boards, including the Bulletin of the University of Porto, the Monumentos Magazine, the Directorate General of Buildings and National Monuments, and is a member of the Editorial Board of JA - Jornal Arquitectos of the Architects Association.
Throughout his career, he has received several awards, the most notable being the Grand Prize of the International Association of Art Critics/Ministry of Culture in 2008, which was also awarded to Sérgio Fernandez for their modern and high-quality work, as well as the historical accuracy of their heritage interventions.
In 2010, he delivered his last formal lecture at FAUP in the Fernando Távora Auditorium, although he continues to direct the Thesis Project Seminar for the PhD course, coordinate the publications of this
