The artist used painting to intervene in all the prints in the edition, giving each one a unique character.

Melancholy and solitude of the human

Gabriel Garcia, one of the most brilliant names in narrative figuration in Portugal, has been particularly distinguished in painting, drawing, and installation. The fantastic, ironic, harsh, and burlesque stories in his paintings are contemporary fables that capture the charm and disillusionment of everyday life. The artist's expression has evolved into a much more sober and refined style, close to the melancholy and secrecy of the great American painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967), whose inspiration he acknowledges. Melancholy and silence burdened with unspoken words, but that seem to emerge from the contained emotion of the image, in this enigmatic print, narrate an absolute solitude of the human, a desert of the soul unable to free itself in the symbolic ascent that the horizontally placed ladder seems to deny.
