Chichorro
Roberto Chichorro was born in 1941 in Lourenço Marques, now Maputo, Mozambique. He worked as an advertising and architectural designer, as well as a decorator for international fairs in Mozambique. He created scenography for performances and illustrated several books.
From 1982 to 1985, he was a scholarship recipient of the Spanish Government in Madrid, focusing on ceramics (Taller Azul) and zincography (Óscar Manezzi). In 1986, he received a scholarship from the Portuguese Government, and has been living in Portugal ever since, dedicating himself exclusively to painting.
Since 1967, he has exhibited individually and in collective shows, both in Portugal and in other European countries and PALOP (Portuguese-speaking African countries). He has received various awards and honorable mentions between 1973 and 2020. In 2012, he was honored at the multidisciplinary cultural event PLAST&CINE, organized by Editorial Novembro in partnership with the Cultural Axis of the Douro.
He is referenced in several dictionaries of Portuguese painters and sculptors, as well as in national and international art magazines. He has also illustrated books by African and Portuguese writers.
Color, vibrancy, exuberance, boldness, inspiration, unpredictability, adornment, figurative, registry, abstractness, freshness, and vigor are just a fraction of the many aspects that define his extensive body of work.
