Artist Honored at the Douro Print Biennial / 2015

In this print work, David de Almeida pays homage to the great Spanish poet and master of the Renaissance, Frei Luis de León (1527-1591), associating his exemplary human and artistic journey with symbolic geometric figures that represent wholeness and ascension, set against suggestive and cosmic blues.

Celebrate the harmonious connection between poetry and visual arts, as the artist takes inspiration from Frei Luis de León's profound and timeless verses, translating them into a visual language that captivates the viewer. Through the use of geometric symbols, the artwork represents the journey towards a higher understanding and transcendence, inviting us to contemplate the vastness of the cosmos and our place within it.

With meticulous attention to detail, David de Almeida's print work showcases his technical mastery and artistic sensibility. The vibrant blues create a sense of depth and expansiveness, evoking an ethereal and contemplative atmosphere. Each line and shape in the composition serves as a poetic gesture, inviting us to explore the intricate connections between art, spirituality, and the universal order.

This artwork is an invitation to reflect on the power of art to transcend boundaries and unite different forms of expression. As we admire this homage to Frei Luis de León, we are reminded of the profound impact that artists can have on our collective consciousness, leaving a lasting legacy that resonates with generations to come.

David de Almeida

David de Almeida was born in 1945. He attended the António Arroio School, the Lithographic Engraver Course, and the Cooperative Society of Engravers. He interned at the Moinhos do Vale do Lagat in France, specializing in handmade paper making. He studied Holography at Goldsmiths University of London and interned with Stanley Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris. He carried out several interventions in public spaces in cities such as São Paulo, Macau, and Lisbon. His engraving work is effectively tactile and visual, originating from the world of senses, with an emphasis on the search for a certain primitivism in the use of colors and lines. The reliefs and counter-reliefs, the incidence of tonalities, the line or shape brought to its plastic essence, make David de Almeida one of the most prominent Portuguese engravers. In 1997, he was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique. He passed away in 2014.
