SILENCED NARRATIVES

For Gabriel Garcia, who has distinguished himself particularly in painting, drawing, and installation, and is one of the brightest names in figuration in Portugal, "the (...) artwork is a long process of inquiry, encounters, and disconnections." A process in which he himself recognizes an element of "interpreting the world" through his "fantastic, ironic, harsh, and burlesque" stories, contemporary fables that capture both the enchantment and disenchantment of our daily lives. The artist's figuration has evolved into a much more sober and refined style, reminiscent of the melancholy and secrecy of the great American painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967), whose inspiration he acknowledges and is evident in this series of prints dedicated to silence. Silence laden with unspoken words, but that seem to emerge from the restrained emotion of his images. Narratives of uninhabited outskirts, which nature seems to share, and that communicate to us the loneliness of the big cities and the souls that inhabit them.
