SILENCE NARRATIVES
For Gabriel Garcia, who has distinguished himself particularly in painting, drawing, and installation, and is one of the brightest names in Portugal's figurative art, "the artwork is a long process of inquiry, encounters, and disconnections." It is a process in which he recognizes a component of "interpreting the world" through his fantastic, ironic, harsh, and burlesque stories, contemporary fables that capture both the enchantment and disenchantment of our daily lives. The artist's figuration has evolved into a much more sober and refined style, reminiscent of the melancholy and secrecy of the great American painter Edward Hopper (1882-1967), whose inspiration he acknowledges and is evident in this series of prints dedicated to silence. Silence laden with unspoken words that seem to emerge from the contained emotion of his images. Narratives of uninhabited peripheries, shared by nature, communicating to us the loneliness of big cities and the souls that inhabit them.
