José Cristóvam Dias was born on April 24, 1931, in Lisbon. In 1951, he began exploring aesthetics in the field of photography for the first time. His name frequently appears in various competitions (Salons) and exhibitions in Portugal and abroad, where he has received several awards.
In 1976, while residing in Matosinhos, he resumed his activity and dedicated himself to color photography. In 1986, he was awarded a grant by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for research in the field of color, which began in January 1987 and was renewed in 1988. In 1993, he was also granted a scholarship by the Orient Foundation and worked and resided in Macau for a period of two months.
He published his first portfolio titled "Times of a Time," which reproduces 25 of his main color works, in Porto in 1985. His second portfolio, titled "Cristóvam Dias," was published in Porto in 1994, and a third one, "Our Sea," was edited by the Municipality of Matosinhos in 2001.
His work is represented in various private collections, as well as in the Photography Documentation Center of the Museum Unit of the University of Minho, the General Delegation of the Alliance Française in Lisbon, the Modern Art Center of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Banco Espírito Santo, the Aliança Seguradora, the Municipality of Matosinhos, the Northern Regional Delegation of the Ministry of Culture, and the Serralves Foundation.
He passed away in 2014.
