Frank Meyer: Art to the Rhythm of Jazz

Frank Meyer, originally from Canada, initially self-taught, embraced his art and pursued formal training after a long career as a Video Director and following the great success of his first solo exhibition in 2005. He then dedicated himself to collage, combining various elements and materials, using pre-painted pieces of paper taken from magazines and books, in a creative process that involves a good dose of improvisation, which the artist compares to jazz music. For these works, he was awarded the "Best in Paper" prize at the 60th anniversary of the "Toronto Outdoor Fair". In this serigraphy, the vibrant colors and sunny atmosphere evoke the city of Lisbon, which inspired him. On the other hand, the fragmented composition and abstract iconography with echoes of the visible refer to collage and the influence of Miró and Kandinsky, two of the founders of contemporary art.

Frank Meyer

Frank Meyer (b. 1949, Toronto, Canada) has been a creative artist since a young age, but not always with paints and brushes. In school, he began playing saxophone in big bands and has been a jazz musician and improviser ever since. For 25 years, he had a creative career writing and directing video productions. In 2005, a few years after starting to draw and paint, he held his first solo art exhibition. Encouraged by his success, Frank returned to studying to pursue an artistic career professionally. He has been a full-time artist ever since. It was in printmaking classes that he began making collages, cutting up his linoleum prints and adding pieces of colored paper, rearranging them into new compositions... much like improvisation in jazz. It became his primary artistic medium. Recently, he has taken a complete turn in transforming these compositions into limited edition screenprints. For Frank, the medium doesn't matter, art is a wonderful and always surprising creative journey.
