THE FACES OF THE NEW AMÁLIA - LEONEL MOURA'S ARTWORK

According to Leonel Moura, a prominent figure in Bio Art in Portugal, with "the increasing digitization of our society (...) we have moved from creating works manually or even conceptually, to digital processes. Contemporary art is "conceived" by algorithms, software, and artificial intelligence, with the role of the human artist being to trigger these processes and let the machines "imagine" with as little control as possible. In fact, and it is a little-known fact, the first Amália in 1987 was already created with the help of new technologies. The new Amália stems from those experiences of the late 1980s. It is based on the original image generated by the scanner, which is chaotic and square-based, to which I added algorithmic manipulation. Finally, as it is a screen printing, I stimulated the combination of various images in the printing process, resulting in several distinct editions."

Although generated by artificial processes, without complete control from its creator, and beyond the chance of its conception, what results from the processes described in these screen prints is a fascinating image of great plastic beauty for an icon of Portuguese Fado that has already inspired its creation before. Mystery and music concentrated in a smile that never quite materializes. In the gaze, all the vitality and melancholy, the dream, the suspension of a destiny that, if fulfilled, could fulfill Portugal. Now addressing us from the threshold of the past, where a future life seems to spread its wings in the endless flight of a lingering spirit.

Leonel Moura

Leonel Moura, born in Lisbon in 1948, is a pioneer in the application of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in art. Since the beginning of the century, he has created several robotic painters. The first paintings made in 2002 with a robotic arm were featured on the cover of MIT magazine dedicated to Artificial Life. RAP, Robotic Action Painter, created in 2006 for the Museum of Natural History in New York, is part of the permanent exhibition. His other works include interactive installations, generative art, 3D, Augmented Reality, "swarm" paintings and sculptures, and the play RUR by Karel Capek, featuring 3 robot actors, premiered in São Paulo in 2010. The Robotarium, inaugurated in 2007, described as a zoo for robots, was the first of its kind in the world. He has recently exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris and the UCCA Museum in Beijing. He was appointed as the European Ambassador for Creativity and Innovation by the European Commission. In the realm of art multiples, he has achieved an innovative profile in the editions produced with CPS. From the series of the 4 seasons using Voronoy mathematical diagrams, to the first engraving created by the ISU robot, to the first screen print from a work created by the RAP - Robotic Action Painter robot, to the "Altamira" series, an edition of 30 original drawings by a RAP robot, to the Voxel screen print with Augmented Reality, and to the recent first NFT. He has held exhibitions and conferences in important international cities such as Paris, New York, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Beijing.
