LEONEL MOURA'S FACES OF THE NEW AMÁLIA
Quoting Leonel Moura, a prominent figure in Bio Art in Portugal, with "the increasing digitalization of our society (...) we have moved from creating works manually, or even conceptually, to digital processes. Contemporary art is "conceived" by algorithms, software, and artificial intelligence, with the human artist triggering these processes and allowing the machines to "imagine" with minimal control. In fact, and little known, the first Amália from 1987 was already created with the help of new technologies. The new Amália derives from those late 80s experiments. It is based on the original image generated by the scanner, which is chaotic and square-based, to which I added algorithmic manipulation. Finally, being a serigraphy, I stimulated the combination of various images in the printing process, resulting in several different editions."
Although generated by artificial processes, without complete control from its author, and beyond the chance of its conception, what emerges from the processes described in these serigraphs is a fascinating image of great plastic beauty for an icon of Portuguese Fado that has already inspired its creation before. Mystery and music concentrated in a smile that never fully reveals itself. In her gaze, there is vitality and melancholy, dreams, and the suspension of a destiny that, if fulfilled, could fulfill Portugal. Now, she turns to us from the threshold of the past, where a future life seems to spread its wings in the endless flight of a spirit that endures.
