Cruzeiro Seixas' paintings and drawings (born in 1920) shape, according to Hellmut Wohl, "the largest, most consistent, and most representative collection of surrealist expression made by a Portuguese artist." Within his creation and in this particular work, a disturbing dreamlike universe vibrates, with its fragmented figures, a landscape populated by unconscious symbols, enigmas that carry an unfathomable mystery. This dreamlike universe is unsettling, almost lunar, with a luminous transparency that corresponds to the opacity and secrecy of its content, under the sign of romantic entanglement, in an atmosphere of suspension and threat, of suffering and aggression that are characteristic of our time.

Cruzeiro Seixas

Born on December 3, 1920, in Amadora, Cruzeiro Seixas is a prominent figure in Portuguese and European Surrealism. Throughout his extensive artistic career, he has explored various artistic phases, including expressionism, neo-realism, and a prolonged period starting in the late 1940s, during which he became a key member of the Portuguese Surrealist movement alongside Mário Cesariny, Carlos Calvet, António Maria Lisboa, Pedro Oom, and Mário Henrique Leiria. Considered one of the pioneers of the movement, Cruzeiro Seixas is now recognized as one of its foremost representatives. The fantastic surrealism evident in his work is believed to have been greatly influenced by the art of De Chirico. He has made significant contributions in the fields of drawing, painting, poetry, sculpture, and object/sculpture. In 1952, he moved to Angola, where he held several individual exhibitions and participated in museum projects. In 1964, seeking refuge from the colonial war, he embarked on a journey across Europe. Along his path, he participated in numerous individual and group exhibitions in Portugal and abroad, receiving several awards and distinctions, including a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1968 and the SocTip "Artist of the Year" Award in 1989. In 1999, he donated his entire collection to the Cupertino de Miranda Foundation, with the aim of establishing a Center for Studies and a Museum of Surrealism. In October 2012, the Portuguese Society of Authors bestowed upon Cruzeiro Seixas the Medal of Honor in recognition of his long and accomplished artistic career as a painter and poet. To further honor him, the Perve Galleries and the Municipality of Oeiras inaugurated the exhibition "Homage to Cruzeiro Seixas - A Step Forward in Africa" at the Cultural Center of the Palácio do Egipto in Oeiras. In 2018, on his 97th birthday, Cruzeiro Seixas was honored by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the Centro Português de Serigrafia, which has been publishing his works for many years. On this occasion, the Catalog of Graphic Works and Art Multiples of the artist was released. His work is widely recognized and easily identifiable, characterized by his unique and inimitable style.
