Etching and Aquatint on Silk

In the artwork of Humberto Marçal, the forms of the botanical world symbolize the energy of growth and transformation that governs the destiny of the cosmos. A sensitive portrayal of nature capable of enveloping the human sphere. In these works, sophisticated impressions on silk bridge the gap between printmaking and painting. The wisdom of the engraver combines with the poet's perspective and the painter's aesthetics, paying attention to the depth and sensory experience of space. Vibrating in the moment, they open up webs of aquatic and terrestrial intimacy in light and color.

Marçal

Humberto Marçal, born in Setúbal, is one of the leading figures in contemporary graphic work in Portugal. Since 1994, he has been responsible for the print and lithography editions at the Centro Português de Serigrafia, where he has generously engaged in dialogue and shared his wisdom with the new generations of artists. As a scholar of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Marçal attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liége, Belgium. He worked at Georges and Bransen's studio (lithography) and at the Polígrafa studio in Barcelona, specializing in artistic engraving. He has served as a technical advisor for courses and other training activities in engraving, lithography, and serigraphy at the most representative venues throughout the country. For several years, he was responsible for the edition of artistic engraving and lithography at the Sociedade Cooperativa de Gravadores Portugueses in Lisbon.
