HOMAGE TO THE MASTER
If Malangatana was able to impose the genius of an expression that sprouted from the mythical and historical roots of a people, Fernando Machiana, inspired by the wisdom and authenticity of this plastic and poetic lesson, created in his honor the chant of a nationality that, like the great Mozambican artist, does not belong to any particular country, but to the ancestral and universal heritage of humanity.
Fernando Machiana
Born in 1939 in Matalana, Mozambique, this artist's artistic journey dates back to his homeland and beyond. As one of the founding members of the Matalana Cultural Center, created and directed by the painter Malangatana, he serves as a trainer. In 1965, he began his artistic career by creating ink, watercolor, and oil paintings. His works evoke scenes from the daily life of rural Mozambique and its traditions, with a focus on his hometown. In 1968, he held his first solo exhibition at the Matalana School and has since participated in various group exhibitions in Mozambique, South Africa, USSR, Italy, Nigeria, the Netherlands, and Portugal. Since 2006, he has been attending the workshop at the Portuguese Screen Printing Center in order to acquire the technique and pass on this knowledge to the working groups at the Matalana Cultural Center. His works can be found in the Mozambique Museum of Art, the Maputo Art Nucleus, as well as in several private collections.
