Andrés Alcántara (b. 1960), an acclaimed Spanish sculptor, has also made a name for himself as an engraver. His work was recognized at the prestigious Graphic Art Fair "Estampa" in 2006. Inspired by primitive art, it has become the hallmark of his creations and is also present in his graphic work. The two series of burin engravings presented here, in different color variations, evoke aspects of Greek mythology: the Maenads (related to the cult of Dionysus and the primal forces of nature) and the Cerberus, guardian of the underworld, featured in Dante's Divine Comedy, associated with the subterranean world. They reflect the lines and forms of the various realms of nature and its creatures, the fluidity of water and air, the flickering and movement of fire, the radiance of light, the patterns and plant-like veins, scales, and feathers. These labyrinths stage Chaos and Cosmos, a language of poetic synthesis that reveals the artistic mastery and full maturity of expression by this artist.
