Garizo do Carmo
Born in Lisbon in 1927, this artist had a strong passion for art from a young age. After attending the Architecture Course from 1944 to 1948, they decided to pursue their true calling in painting. They became part of the "Grupo dos Independentes" in Porto, where they exhibited alongside renowned artists such as Fernando Lanhas and Júlio Resende at the 1st Salon of Abstract and Independent Art.
From 1948 to 1954, they furthered their artistic education by attending the Fine Arts Schools of Toulouse, Grenoble, and the Ateliers Zavaoni in Paris, as well as the Grand Chaumière, specializing in painting and printmaking. During their time in Paris, they even set up a ceramic workshop and explored the world of graphic arts. In 1954, they moved to the city of Beira, where they worked in various artistic disciplines such as architecture, decoration, painting, sculpture, and graphic arts, leaving behind numerous works in Manica and Zambézia.
In 1962, they settled in Lourenço Marques and embarked on a career as a journalist, combining their love for writing with their artistic talents. In 1964, they were commissioned to create a large mural panel for the BNU. Throughout their career, they received scholarships from prestigious institutions such as the French Government in Paris (1950/52), the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation at the University of London (1970/72), and the People's Republic of Poland in Warsaw (1979/80), which allowed them to further expand their artistic horizons.
Sadly, this talented artist passed away in 1997 in Cascais, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and passion for the arts.
