Fables for Adults by Clara Martins

In a similar vein to Paula Rego, Clara Martins recreates children's fables to express the ghosts, illusions, and fantasies of an adult world, stemming from both personal and collective imagination. This is also evident in her disturbing "ladybug" universe, serving as metaphors for the traumas and allowed escapades in a perverse and repressive society.

Clara Martins

Born in Lourenço Marques (Maputo), Mozambique, in 1973, the artist has been based in Sydney, Australia, from an early age. She studied Fine Arts at the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales, where she also completed a Master's degree in Art and specialized in Graphic Art at the Sydney Graphics College. She began her career as a visual artist in the early 90s, exhibiting in various prestigious Australian galleries. In 1997, she moved to Portugal and held her first solo exhibition in 2001. She has received important awards, such as the Altshuler Painting Award from the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales, Australia; the "Honorable Mention" at the Ambientart Leiria Competition; and the "Portuguese Community in Australia 2002 Award" instituted by the Consulate General of Portugal in Sydney.
