RUI HORTA PEREIRA - Cosmic and Original Joy

There is a certain minimalism in the drawings, gouaches, and watercolors presented by Rui Horta Pereira (b. 1975) in 2019 at the D. Luís I Foundation, reminiscent of Ângelo de Sousa's work. These pieces explore elements that the artist considers fundamental: "the place, the line, and the space." Created during an artistic residency in the Algarve, they are the result, in the artist's words, of the encounter between "the effect of the sun burning the pigments on the paper" and the profiles of a stone, "multiplied" into compositions of intense chromaticism. These works are characterized by the dynamic interplay between spaces and lines, defining dynamic forms that seem imbued with movement, a source of cosmic and original joy.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT ON THE SILKSCREEN PRINTS - "ESTRATIGRÁFICO" SERIES

The silkscreen prints now revealed are the result - and the word is not used lightly - of the encounter between the work I develop in collaboration and the effect that the sun has on burning the pigments on the paper. They also stem from the challenge posed by Filipe Vasconcelllos to create a label for Morgado do Quintão in 2019. In mediating this process, a stone extracted from the territory was dissected into various "stratigraphic" profiles, which were then multiplied into compositions featuring an expanded chromatic palette. It could be said that the visual result is the product of a maturation of time, drawing upon its creative essence.
