RUI HORTA PEREIRA: A Cosmic and Original Joy
The drawings, gouaches, and watercolors presented by Rui Horta Pereira (b. 1975) in 2019 at the Fundação D. Luís I exhibit a certain minimalism reminiscent of Ângelo de Sousa. These works explore elements that the artist considers fundamental: "place, line, and space." Created during an artistic residency in the Algarve, they are the result, in the artist's own words, of the encounter between "the effect that the sun has on burning the pigments of the paper" and the profiles of a stone "multiplied" into compositions of intense chromaticism. These compositions are based precisely on the dynamic relationship between spaces and lines, delimiting dynamic forms that appear animated with movement, a place of cosmic and original joy.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT ON THE SCREENPRINTS - "ESTRATIGRÁFICO" SERIES
The serigraphic result that is now revealed is the fruitful outcome - and the word is not used lightly - of the encounter between the work I develop in collaboration with the effect caused by the sun burning the pigments of the paper and the challenge posed by Filipe Vasconcelllos to create a label for Morgado do Quintão in 2019. Mediating this process was a stone extracted from the territory and dissected into various "stratigraphic" profiles, which were then multiplied in compositions of a wide chromatic palette. It can be said that the visual result is the product of time's maturation and that it draws its creative essence from it.
