Nim Castanheira

Nim, the artistic name of Teresa Castanheira, was born in Lisbon in 1959. She holds a degree in Musical Sciences from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and is a professor of Music History and History of Culture and Arts at the Escola de Música do Conservatório Nacional. She has collaborated with various media outlets – Antena 2, TSF, and SIC – with a particular highlight as a music critic for the weekly newspaper Expresso from 1998 to 2006. In the field of visual arts, she has developed her artistic career at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes in Lisbon, where she attended courses in Painting, Drawing, and Art History. Since 1999, she has participated in several collective and solo exhibitions, both in Portugal (Galerias Diferença, Novo Século, and São Mamede; Douro, Coruche, and Montijo Biennials) and abroad (Barcelona, Paris, and Macau). She is a member of the artists' collective of the Cooperativa / Galeria Diferença, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019. She is dedicated to promoting music and painting through courses held at various institutions and companies such as Centro Nacional de Cultura, El Corte Inglés, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Museu Paula Rego, Fundação Júlio Resende, Banco de Portugal, and the Municipal Councils of Cascais, Oeiras, Vila Franca de Xira, and Alpiarça. She has published the books História da Música, uma Introdução in partnership with El Corte Inglés and Arranha-Céus Editora (2012) and Cores & Sons, um Diálogo entre a Pintura e a Música do séc. XX by Livros Horizonte (2015). She is currently working on a second volume that combines the themes of music and painting. Nim Castanheira has already released a collection of fifteen prints published by the Centro Português de Serigrafia (2013, 2015, and 2017).
