The Terrestrial Splendor

Master engraver Humberto Marçal offers us with this artwork an exercise in plastic and poetic virtuosity. A landscape of cosmic and dreamlike meaning, in maritime tones, bathed by the light of a subaqueous sun, the quintessence of a reality that ascends to its alchemical condition. The color evokes suggestions open to multiple interpretations, re-enchanting the great mysteries of the soul and the world. Vibrating in the present moment, opening the terrestrial splendor in light, the sun symbolizing the energy of growth and transformation that presides over the destinies of the Cosmos, a poetic image of nature capable of encompassing the human within its sphere.

Marçal

Humberto Marçal, born in Setúbal, is one of the leading figures in contemporary graphic work in Portugal. Since 1994, he has been responsible for the print and lithography editions at the Centro Português de Serigrafia, where he has generously engaged in dialogue and shared his wisdom with the new generations of artists. As a scholar of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Marçal attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liége, Belgium. He worked at Georges and Bransen's studio (lithography) and at the Polígrafa studio in Barcelona, specializing in artistic engraving. He has served as a technical advisor for courses and other training activities in engraving, lithography, and serigraphy at the most representative venues throughout the country. For several years, he was responsible for the edition of artistic engraving and lithography at the Sociedade Cooperativa de Gravadores Portugueses in Lisbon. In the field of restoration, Marçal has worked since 1970 at the Graphic Document Restoration Workshop of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. As an artist-engraver, Marçal has participated in important individual and collective exhibitions.
