★ Award for Best Engravings at Estampa 2006 - International Printmaking Exhibition, Madrid.
Andrés Alcántara, a prominent figure in young Spanish sculpture, follows in the footsteps of the master Brancusi, the first of the modern artists to establish the grammar of a new refinement, both poetic and artistic, inspired by the primitives. The African sculpture, which also served as a reference for Picasso, resonates with the magic of its forms and rituals in Alcántara's work, creating a new formulation of a post-cubist grammar that is enriched with the halo of an inaugural, surrealistic mystery, recognized by poets such as Cruzeiro Seixas and Mário Cesariny.
As a sculptor and poet, Alcántara not only reconnects with the lost link to the original sources of archetypes but also gives three-dimensional form to the contents of an ancestral imaginary. In 2006, the works by Alcántara that we present today, inspired by the mythical figure of the dragon, received the award for the best engraving at Estampa. These works were executed by the skilled technicians at the CPS workshop, in three variants based on plates engraved by the renowned artist, showcasing his talent and sculptor's craftsmanship.
