CELEBRATION OF POP CULTURE
João Galrão (b.1975), who lives and works in Lisbon and has been exhibiting in Portugal, France, and Spain since 1996, has recently been developing a Pop and psychedelic language in his paintings, which is evident in these screen-print works. Pop culture and art, with their famous paintings like Richard Hamilton's (1922-2011), their icons such as Elvis Presley and James Dean, coexist with other contemporary aesthetic references like Marcel Duchamp's ready-made, in a kaleidoscopic universe of quotations. They give life to a sinuous game of phosphorescent lines, frames, and captivating and disconcerting signs, drawing attention to the true ambivalence of life, eroticism, and death.
