Mário Cesariny

Born in Lisbon in 1923, this artist studied at the António Arroio School and the Grande Chaumière Academy in Paris, where they had contact with artists from the DADA and surrealist groups. Their artistic journey also includes musical training with Fernando Lopes Graça. They went through a period of neorealism and in 1947, they experimented with avant-garde art by creating a collage featuring General de Gaulle, showcasing an evident break from convention. They played a prominent role in the formation of the Surrealist Group of Lisbon, which they later left to form another group called "The Surrealists" with Pedro Oom, Cruzeiro Seixas, António Maria Lisboa, Carlos Calvet, among others. In 1964/65, they were awarded a scholarship from FCG to study in Paris, London, and Lausanne. Their artistic work explores both literature and visual arts. In 2002, they were honored with the prestigious EDP Visual Arts Award, and in 2005, they were awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Liberty. They passed away in Lisbon in 2006. Photo: Eduardo Tomé
