Andrés Alcántara, a renowned Spanish sculptor born in 1960, is known for his exceptional work with stone carving, a process reserved for the gifted and master craftsmen. In addition, he also chooses the more challenging path of using the arduous technique of Buril, a type of engraving that involves cutting directly into a metal plate. This technique is distinguished by its sharpness and requires great dexterity and skill.

Andrés Alcántara has received numerous awards and recognition for his work, including being honored at the prestigious Estampa Graphic Art Fair in 2006. His artistic creation is characterized by a dialogue with primitive art, which is also evident in his graphic work. The two series of Buril engravings presented here, in various color variations, evoke aspects of Greek mythology. One series portrays the Ménades, associated with the worship of Dionysus and the primal forces of nature, while the other depicts Cancerbero, the guardian of the underworld, as described in Dante's Divine Comedy. These engravings reflect the lines and forms found in the various realms of nature and its creatures, capturing the fluidity of water and air, the shimmering and movement of fire, the radiance of light, and the intricate patterns of plants, scales, and feathers. They create labyrinths that stage both Chaos and Cosmos, a poetic synthesis that reveals the artistic mastery and full maturity of the artist's expression.
