Renowned sculptor Andrés Alcántara, who works with direct carving in stone, has also chosen the more challenging path of using the burin, a technique of engraving and incising directly onto a metal plate. This technique is distinguished by its sharp lines and requires great dexterity and mastery of hand.
Andrés Alcántara (b. 1960), an award-winning and recognized Spanish sculptor, has also made a name for himself as an engraver. In 2006, one of his works was distinguished at the prestigious graphic art fair, Estampa. The dialogue with primitive art has become the hallmark of his creative expression, which is also evident in his graphic works. The two series of burin engravings presented here, in various color variations, evoke aspects of Greek mythology: the Maenads (related to the cult of Dionysus and the primal forces of nature) and Cerberus, the guardian of the underworld, as depicted in Dante's Divine Comedy, associated with the subterranean world. They reflect the lines and forms of various realms of nature and its creatures, the fluidity of water and air, the shimmer and movement of fire, the radiance of light, and the intricate patterns of vegetation, scales, and feathers. These labyrinths stage Chaos and Cosmos, a language of poetic synthesis that reveals the artistic mastery and full maturity of the artist's expression.
