Engraving by David de Almeida, one of the masters of contemporary printmaking, exhibited in the exhibition titled 'CadĂȘncia' (Cadence), held in 2011 at the temporary exhibition gallery of the Portuguese Serigraphy Center in the Centro Cultural de BelĂ©m. In this collection, the artist once again engages in an original dialogue, characteristic of his style, with prehistoric inscriptions. A language of plastic signs acquires a special power of resonance on the monochromatic backgrounds. The small white circular marks, in a rhythmic pattern, evoke the rhythm of small gestures that are the origin of all creation, as well as the incisions made in the Neolithic period for the cutting of monumental stones. Permeable to the sun, moonlight, rain, dew, and the modulation of seasons, they become a palette of the universe. The exhibition is accompanied by a book of the same name that explores the rhythm of the minimalist language of stone incisions inspired by the Neolithic period.

David de Almeida

David de Almeida was born in 1945. He attended the AntĂłnio Arroio School, the Lithographic Engraver Course, and the Cooperative Society of Engravers. He interned at the Moinhos do Vale do Lagat in France, specializing in handmade paper making. He studied Holography at Goldsmiths University of London and interned with Stanley Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris. He carried out several interventions in public spaces in cities such as SĂŁo Paulo, Macau, and Lisbon. His engraving work is effectively tactile and visual, originating from the world of senses, with an emphasis on the search for a certain primitivism in the use of colors and lines. The reliefs and counter-reliefs, the incidence of tonalities, the line or shape brought to its plastic essence, make David de Almeida one of the most prominent Portuguese engravers. In 1997, he was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique. He passed away in 2014.
