Jose de Guimarães is one of the leading figures in contemporary Portuguese painting and a renowned artist globally. His artistic expression is characterized by an aesthetic of fragmentation that has been evolving since the beginning of his career. The combinatory play of colorful forms seems inexhaustible, just like the shapes of the world. The artist has always paid special attention to his graphic work, imprinting it with remarkable quality. A painter, printmaker, ceramist, and pedagogue, he was born in 1921. He studied architecture and painting at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. He began exhibiting individually in 1948. In 1960, he was awarded the Silva Porto Prize by the National Information Service. Sá Nogueira's artistic journey, initially influenced by neo-realist aesthetics and coinciding with his stay in London, evolved into a highly free figuration close to poetic informality, marked by the dynamic use of color in contrasts of great sobriety and expressive value, punctuated by signs of a sensitive and luminous visual language.
