Francisco Simões

Born in Almada in 1946, the artist completed the course at the School of Decorative Arts António Arroio in 1965 and the Sculpture course at the Madeira Academy of Music and Fine Arts in 1974. In 1967, they received a scholarship from the OECD in Rome, Turin, Novara, Verona, and Milan, and the following year, they worked at the Louvre Museum as invited by Germain Bazin. In 1989, they were appointed by the Ministry of Education as a consultant in Visual Arts for the project - Culture starts in School. In 1990, they collaborated with the Journal of Letters, Arts, and Ideas, and in 1992, they were appointed by the Ministry of Education as a member of the working group for Humanization and Aesthetic Enhancement of Educational Spaces. They chose Sintra as their home and workplace for over 20 years, but currently reside on the island of Madeira, where they established the "Francisco Simões Arts Center." As both a painter and sculptor, they have created a series of monuments and artworks in public spaces, including the sculptures in the Poets Park in Oeiras.
