A Feminine Universe

Luzia Lage was born in Lisbon in 1962 and completed the Drawing and Painting Course at IADE, while also attending the Painting Course at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon. Her work, like that of Armanda Passos or Evelina Oliveira, gives shape to a very particular feminine universe, where women emerge as mediators between the visible and the invisible, the real and the unreal. Solitary Penelope awaits the visit of the marvelous, of which she is already the custodian, descending upon her with a flutter of wings and delicate enigmas, as if the world were a closed garden that only reveals itself in the proximity of the sensitive and protective aura that she emanates and represents, a small goddess of the earth and the seas, crowned with roses and friend of fishes. Even in the face of the dramas that sometimes seem to threaten her, symbolized by the disturbing creatures of a fantastic universe.

Luzia Lage

Luzia Lage was born in October 1962 in Lisbon. She completed the Drawing and Painting Course at IADE and, simultaneously, the Painting Course at the Fine Arts University of Lisbon. Lídia Jorge wrote about the artist: "Through animistic expressionism, her work reveals the rigor of drawing, the transfiguration of the body, and freedom in space"; "...Luzia Lage paints the perplexity of life. The weight of reality and the lightness of overcoming. The power of dreams and the distance of sleep. The mystery of creativity and the limits of hands. The enchantment of ideas and the oscillation of matter...". She has been awarded the following prizes: 1st Prize Imprensa in the category of Plastic Arts "Female Personality of Portugal 2009" and the International Prize: 1st Prize in Painting and Fidelity to Art awarded by the Vera World Fine Art Festival 2015. In addition to her numerous solo and group exhibitions, the artist also works with public art, including the three-dimensional tile panel - "Mothers of Water", CREL, and the collective commemorative panel for the inauguration of the Casa do Artista in Lisbon.
