Born in 1929 in Spain, the artist later established his residence in Paris in 1956, and subsequently in Montreal in 1981, and New York in the 1990s. As a founding member of the renowned “El Paso,” he became an exponent of Spanish informalism.
His works are represented in museum collections around the world. Throughout his career, he has been honored with several awards, including the 1955 Mediterranean Art Biennial in Alexandria, the 1956 Mediterranean Art Biennial in Cairo/Athens, the U.M.A M. Prize at the Paris Biennial in 1959, and the David Bright Prize at the 30th Venice Biennale in 1960.
In 1993, he was appointed Commander of Arts and Letters in France, and in 1998, he received the Gold Medal of Fine Arts and was elected as an Academic at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. In 2002, he was awarded the Grand Prize AECA at Arco’02 in Madrid.
He passed away on February 7, 2021.
