João Ribeiro was born in Lisbon in 1955. He graduated in Painting from the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon and has since participated in various Art Biennials and solo and group exhibitions.
In 1985, he received the Espírito Santo Neves Painting Award at the II Biennial of Chaves. His career, which started in 1985, initially revealed an abstract style. However, after a stay in Belgium, his work became populated with the appearance of angels, icons, and allegorical figures, all with the mastery of the technique he had developed up until that point.
Currently, he excels in the deepening of drawing technique, while the symbolic nature of his works has increased. He uses a non-geometric pictorial space, with allegorical figures and environments reminiscent of medieval and popular symbolism. Alongside the themes, great care is given to both drawing and color.
