Fernando Machiana

Born in 1939 in Matalana, Mozambique, this artist’s artistic journey dates back to his homeland and beyond. As one of the founding members of the Matalana Cultural Center, created and directed by the painter Malangatana, he serves as a trainer. In 1965, he began his artistic career by creating ink, watercolor, and oil paintings. His works evoke scenes from the daily life of rural Mozambique and its traditions, with a focus on his hometown. In 1968, he held his first solo exhibition at the Matalana School and has since participated in various group exhibitions in Mozambique, South Africa, USSR, Italy, Nigeria, the Netherlands, and Portugal. Since 2006, he has been attending the workshop at the Portuguese Screen Printing Center in order to acquire the technique and pass on this knowledge to the working groups at the Matalana Cultural Center. His works can be found in the Mozambique Museum of Art, the Maputo Art Nucleus, as well as in several private collections.
