Each artwork in the "Fausto's Dreams" series has been individually intervened with painting by the artist, making each one a unique piece.
Pedro Calapez (b. 1953), who lives and works in Lisbon, is one of the most renowned artists of his generation. He has been exhibiting collectively since the 1970s and individually since 1982, both in Portugal and abroad.
In these individually intervened serigraphs, inspired by Fernando Pessoa's book "Fausto," Calapez offers us the visual universe of his dreams, which he himself describes as follows: "A gray area, a dark tone, an undefined wall, a limit without limits, translucent opacity: my dreams. Moments in which waking up doesn't happen and the dream doesn't recollect us in its story, because at that moment, the story stopped. I tear myself away from that nightmare, waking up abruptly but with a vivid memory that the unknown will never be reached. I don't know if I'm experiencing the limits and I think of Fausto."
An unknown threshold of myth, of a ultimate knowledge that remains forbidden with expression in the labyrinth of forms and in the festive and mysterious universe of color. Gold, roses, and blues shine through the nostalgic and obscure grid of blacks, and under the guise that adds their fascination and enigma. Color seems to be the key to a world and an atmosphere that the painter associates with Fausto, with his illusions of eternal youth. And yet, it is a truth that is glimpsed, one that only silence holds the secret to, beyond words, taking shape in these works of great plastic and poetic mastery. A descent into the depths of the unconscious from which an enlivened soul emerges, capable of enjoying all the enchantment of nature and a life returned to itself.
