The German and international artist Matthias Contzen (b. 1964), who has been based in Portugal since 1998, lives and works in Lisbon. Represented by important galleries in Paris and the USA, his multimedia work combines light and sound with marble, his preferred raw material, to illuminate and enrich it. His work is represented in private and public collections in various European countries, Brazil, the USA, Canada, China, and India. In 2009, he founded the Sculpture Factory in Sintra, which he directs and serves as both a studio and art gallery. His work, which falls within the conceptual line of contemporary art, expresses ideas and concepts rooted in the central and vital structures of matter and in the archetypal and symbolic forms of the universe, as evidenced by the magnificent series of labyrinths presented in his four-color prints. His acrylic pieces, which combine the square and the circle, evoke the structure of mandalas, instruments of meditation and integration of the self in the cosmos.
