The Magic of Engraving
Pedro Proença (born in 1962), a painter, writer, and musician, is one of the most prominent artists of his generation. In the visual arts, he has dedicated himself to illustration, installation, and engraving, as we can see in the magnificent series he presents to us today. He takes painting and its history as a theme, evoking the fantastic universe of Bosch, Brueghel, or Arcimboldo, from whom he may have inherited a certain fantastic and dreamlike realism that partially characterizes his iconography. Also, the grotesque, humor, and social satire, which are not surprising coming from one of the creators of the homeostatic movement, revolutionary in the 80s, reflect these aspects. The engravings we present, aquatint, etching, and drypoint, contribute to the fascination and mystery of these images, a kind of bestiary that serves as true icons of an adult and innocent unconsciousness at the same time.
