Natura Viva, 1999

Academy of Arts, Berlin, Germany

Natura Viva explores the transient nature of beauty and the cycle of life. This captivating performance took place in the pond of the renowned Berlin academy as part of the Art of Advertising exhibition, alongside notable artists such as Jeff Koons. Regina Frank meticulously embroidered a flowing white muslin dress adorned with delicate white lilies. Concealed within the trays overflowing with flowers were hidden verses of poetry. With great delicacy, she slowly unveiled her dress, and proceeded to recite the poetic lines emanating from the blossoms. Utilizing the petals as makeup and the water as a cleansing agent, she poetically delved into the symbolism of the lily, eloquently expressing themes of innocence, aging, and withering. The perception of decay varies greatly depending on one's connection to it and their perspective.
