Series in Tribute to Carlos Paredes

Sara Maia (Lisbon, 1974) completed her training at ARCO in Lisbon. She has been exhibiting regularly since 1992 and is currently exclusively represented by the Parisian gallery Patrice Trigano. Her talent and creativity have emerged from an early age, constituting one of the most promising paths of her generation. The highly narrative aspect and a caustic and subtly ironic look at the small and great dramas of our society have remained the most emblematic aspect of her style, which fights against traditional morality by demystifying all its false values and patterns of behavior. Close to the imaginary of an artist with the international caliber of Paula Rego, Sara Maia has been successfully forging her own path, where the violence of certain images combines with the grotesque and the fantastic of a dispassionate gaze, creating images of a contemporary theater of cruelty. These same characteristics are present in this serigraphy, "disguised" in a universe of modern fairy tales for adults. In a richly filled imaginary stage scenario, the figures between the human and the animal communicate an atmosphere of fear and suspended threat that seems imminent.

Sara Maia

Sara Maia was born in Lisbon in 1974. She completed her training at ARCO in Lisbon. She has been exhibiting regularly since 1992. Her talent and creativity have been evident from a very young age, making her one of the most promising artists of her generation. The highly narrative aspect and a caustic and subtly ironic perspective on the small and big dramas of our society have remained the most emblematic aspect of her style, which challenges traditional morality by demystifying all its false values and behavioral patterns. Close to the imaginary world of an artist with the international stature of Paula Rego, Sara Maia has successfully paved her own path where the violence of certain images combines with the grotesque and the fantastic of an impassive gaze, creating images of a contemporary theater of cruelty.
