CRITICAL OBSERVATIONS

Noronha da Costa, one of the leading names in Portuguese contemporary art

Noronha da Costa, painter, filmmaker, and architect, was born in 1942 in Lisbon and is recognized by critics as one of the leading names in Portuguese contemporary art. The artist, who celebrated 50 years of his career in 2017, has been developing an aesthetic centered on the problematic of the image, which is already present in his early works, collages in which he explored double and ambiguous images. An incursion into the poetics of objects that construct an undefined and surreal space would continue in his painting, which José Augusto França defines as a "neoromantic situation that goes to the phantasmagoric sources of surrealism (...) and constitutes an 'unrealization of the real' of profound modern consciousness". According to art critic Maria João Fernandes, the modernity of Noronha da Costa lies precisely in his ability to question appearances, considering the visible as the starting point of an intellectual, sensitive, and dreamlike experience. In the current serigraphy, the overlapping of planes brings together various images of a nature that are more than just representations, but the dazzling suggestion of the mystery and fascination that preside over it.

Noronha da Costa

Noronha da Costa was born on April 17, 1942. He was a certified architect from the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, a filmmaker, and a renowned painter. He has exhibited both individually and collectively in almost all countries in Europe, as well as in the East and the Americas. He has been invited to represent Portugal in various international events, including the São Paulo Biennial, the Venice Biennale, the exhibition "Portuguese Art since 1910" in London, the exhibition "Portugal Today" at the Conde Duque Cultural Center in Madrid, and the exhibition "Regards sur le XXéme Siécle" at the Maison des Arts in Brussels. Among his numerous awards and honors, he was selected by the Portuguese section of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) in 1971. In 1999, he was invited to hold the inaugural exhibition at the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto. In the same year, he was awarded the "European Painting Prize" by the European Parliament, receiving well-deserved international recognition. In late 2003, a comprehensive retrospective of his work was held at the Belém Cultural Center, supported by the publication of an extensive monograph titled "Noronha da Costa revisited 1965-1983," published by Edições Asa. In 2012, he was awarded the title of "Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique" by the President of the Republic on June 10. His works are part of important collections and institutions such as Banco Espírito Santo and CAMJAP/Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, and he is also included in the Collection of Buckingham Palace. In 1985, the President of the Republic, General Ramalho Eanes, offered a painting by Noronha da Costa to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England during her official visit to Portugal. Noronha da Costa imparted an original and individual touch to his painting, and his work is easily recognizable for its unique style. He passed away on April 9, 2020, in Lisbon.
