"Machinic Diatoms: 3 Irrealities envisions a future where nano machines, specifically designed molecular constructors, coexist within the human body. These unicellular machines have the ability to enter our cells through our membranes and pores, becoming both invited and uninvited guests. They find residence among the organelles that contribute to the maintenance and survival of our cells, forming a complex ecosystem. Our bodies, already constructed as multicellular bio electrochemical agents, consist of various communicating and competing systems, some with our own DNA and others without. Within this intricate web, healthful bacteria aid in digestion and protect against harmful bacteria, creating a delicate balance. The micro machines depicted in the artwork are neither human nor biological in appearance, but rather speculative forms that represent engineered micro bio and machinic agents with the potential to support our natural cellular systems.
Artist Ken Rinaldo, known for his interactive multimedia installations that blur the boundaries between the organic and inorganic, has been exploring the intersection of art and biology for over three decades. His works delve into interactive robotics, biological art, artificial life, inter-species communication, and digital imagery. In this particular artwork, Rinaldo presents us with a manipulated nature that flourishes in new forms and colors within a virtual universe of exquisite and rare beauty."
