"Machinic Diatoms: 3 unrealities envisions a future where molecular designers will allow for the coexistence of unicellular nanomachines within the human body. These machines may enter through our membranes and pores, becoming both invited and uninvited guests. They will find residence among the healthful organelles that are essential for our cellular maintenance and survival. Our bodies are complex systems, composed of multicellular bioelectrochemical agents that communicate and compete with and without our own DNA. The healthful bacteria that aid in digestion and protect against harmful bacteria are part of a complex ecological network that strives to maintain balance both inside and outside our bodies. The images of these constructed micro machines are neither human nor biological, but rather speculative forms that envision engineered micro-bio and machinic agents with properties to support our natural cellular systems.
In this artwork, American artist Ken Rinaldo showcases his expertise in interactive multimedia installations that blur the boundaries between the organic and the inorganic. With a career spanning over three decades, Rinaldo has explored the intersections of art and biology, particularly in interactive robotics, biological art, artificial life, interspecies communication, and digital imaging. Through his work, he presents us with a manipulated nature that blossoms in new forms and colors within a virtual universe of exquisite and rare beauty.
