Malangatana
Born on June 6, 1936 in Mozambique, this artist's journey began at the art center in 1958, where he had the support of painter Zé Júlio. In 1971, he received a scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation in printmaking and ceramics, which allowed him to experience a society outside of Mozambique and Africa for the first time.
In 1973, he returned to Europe, traveling through various countries and visiting numerous studios, museums, and galleries. In 1980, he went back to Maputo and was appointed as the director of the Crafts Department, where he dedicated himself to supporting and developing artisan cooperatives in the city. However, in 1985, he decided to solely focus on his career in the visual arts.
In 1997, he was honored by UNESCO as an Artist for Peace. He was also awarded the Nachingwea Medal for his contribution to Mozambican culture and was appointed as a Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique.
Sadly, he passed away on January 5, 2011 in Matosinhos.
