Celeste Maia

Born in Mozambique in 1941, the artist studied in Mozambique, South Africa, France, and the United States. She has painted and exhibited her work in various countries including the United States, Brazil, Czechoslovakia, Portugal, Spain, and Italy, among others. She has also organized two traveling exhibitions in Asia, visiting countries such as India, Thailand, China, Korea, and Japan. In the year 2000, she published an art book about her career as a painter, titled "The Secret Festivals". From 2006 to 2008, she wrote and illustrated three children's books in Portuguese and English - "The Never-Ending Painting", "The Chess-Playing Dog", and "Nicolas & Nyoka". "The Never-Ending Painting" received the Ler Mais award from the National Reading Plan. In 2009, a new abstract phase emerged in her painting, coinciding with her exploration of watercolors. In 2010, she was a fellow at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, spending six weeks in the 15th-century castle of the Foundation in Umbria. There, she continued to work on large-scale abstract watercolor paintings. The experience was highly stimulating, with the opportunity to interact with other extraordinary fellows from around the world and visit the beautiful frescoes of Piero della Francesca in the region. Upon returning to Madrid in November 2010, the artist received a commission from the Spanish firm Colomer & Sons to paint 20 exclusive high-quality clocks. It was a considerable challenge, and she spent months researching themes and presenting over 200 ideas on paper until it was decided that "Time" would be the ideal theme. But what is Time? Read more in the Art on the Wrist section. The artist loves to travel the world, discover new countries, immerse herself in different cultures, cuisines, and sounds. Above all, what she enjoys most during these trips is the opportunity to observe and photograph people in their everyday routines. Her heart will always remain in Mozambique, where all her dreams come to rest. She currently resides in Madrid.
