Ema Berta

Born in Sintra in 1944, she studied German Philology at the University and completed a degree in Fine Arts - Painting at ESBAL. She was a member of the board of SNBA in Lisbon for 5 years and also a professor of Design and Decorative Arts at the Superior School of Art and Design of the Ricardo Espírito Santo Foundation. She currently lives and works in France. Since the 80s, she has had solo exhibitions in galleries in Portugal and France, including: Temporary Exhibition Gallery of the Municipal Museum of Sintra; Galerie de La Maison de l'Europe, Paris, France; National Palace of Mafra (installation); Consulate Gallery of Portugal in Toronto, Canada; EPAL Water Museum, Lisbon; Galerie E.C., Paris, France. In 2004, she created a tile panel to cover the Algueirão/Mem-Martins viaduct in Portugal. She has also participated in several group exhibitions in Portugal, France, and Brazil, such as: Vila Nova de Cerveira Biennial; 2nd Azores and Atlantic Art Biennial, 1987; Invited to the Heidelberg Biennial, Germany, 1990; Modern Art Gallery Collective, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1994; BANIF Grand Prize, Lisbon, 1995; FIAC 97, Paris, France, 1997; The Place of Drawing, Estremoz Museum, 1998; Feminine Sensibilities, Foz Palace, Lisbon, 1998; Nativity for an Altarpiece, Jerónimos Monastery, Lisbon, 2000; Holy Spirit Theme, Torre do Tombo, Lisbon, 2003. In 1980, she received an Honorable Mention at the Autumn Salon - Estoril. Her work is represented in collections such as: I.C.E.P.- Berlin, Germany; Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Lisbon and Paris; Bank of Portugal; Carlos Machado Museum, Ponta Delgada, Azores; Municipal Museum of Sintra; Municipal Museum of Figueira da Foz; Drawing Museum, Estremoz; EPAL Water Museum, Lisbon; Consulate of Portugal, Toronto, Canada, among others.
