Mimi's painting recreates, many years after its apocalyptic eruption in the 60s, the fascination of Pop art, but adds a touch of derision and vulgarity that brings it closer to the kitsch universe. The world of feminine objects that the artist ironizes perhaps appeals to an ongoing emancipation of women, or perhaps more broadly to human beings who are dominated by machines, emblematic of contemporary society. Instead of liberating us, these machines enslave us.

Mimi

Mimi Tavares was born in 1962. She completed an Illustration course with the painter Maria Keil in 1982. She holds a degree in Painting from E.S.B.A.L. in 1988 and has been teaching Painting at Arte Ilimitada since 2003. She has been exhibiting individually since 1985, with her first exhibition "Pintura" at E.S.B.A.L. in Lisbon. Among the several solo exhibitions she has already held, we highlight her presence in galleries such as Galeria de S. Bento (Lisbon), Galeria Monumental (Lisbon), Galeria Paula Fampa (Braga), and the Museu de José Malhoa (Caldas da Rainha). She has also participated in several collective exhibitions, both in Portugal and abroad. Her works are represented in important art collections, such as Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Colecção da Direcção-Geral do Património Cultural (Ministério da Cultura de Portugal), and Fundação António Prates.
